i watched it for the first time the other day and i absolutely loved it. i was comparing it to the philadelphia story which is one of my favourites and i think i might actually like the shop around the corner more. james stewart and margaret sullavan were so charming and wonderful in the film.
if someone didn't like you've got mail i still recommend this film because it's a thousand times better.
well their chemistry is impecable margaret sullivan was notorious for being more than somewhat difficult to work with but jimmy stewart was the only actor known who could follow her moodswings and keep her working they were very very good friends and he was so very much in love with her that it was YEARS before he himself got married because he waited until his affections were absolutely hopeless and all that energy just came out in their acting making it ever so much more incredible and so much better than philadelphia story i love PS but i love SATC so much more
I like all these movies but in order of preference:
1. The Shop Around the Corner (love, love, love. It's the dialogue, Stewart & Sullavan with fantastic character actors & actresses) 2. In the Good Old Summertime (love, great cast) 3. You've Got Mail (Like a lot, Hanks & Ryan are always yummy)
I just finished watching this now - first time in probably two years or so. Terrific film, but the word "Matuschek" was definitely overused (as discussed on that other thread). Reminds me of the film The More the Merrier, in which Charles Coburn overused a phrase...I forget the phrase now.
One part that always gets a laugh out of me is the part where Kralik tells Vadash to switch around the brown and black suitcases. He sure found the right activity for that jerk while he and the others worked out his dismissal!
