She Loves Me

I have not read every single post, but I notice that no one has mentioned that this film, or the original play, or whatever, was made into a Broadway musical, "She Loves Me". Wikipedia says "She Loves Me" was the fifth adaptation of "Parfumerie". It had kind of a short run when it opened in 1963 (that was the year of "Oliver!". It is a beautiful, quiet, charming little musical. It has been more successful in revival, and there is an original cast CD, and recordings of 2 revival productions. Occasionally there are regional and university productions.
I knew the show before I saw "Shop Around the Corner", and since the character names are all different (and they are all simply different Hungarian names), I always get confused. Margaret Sullavan's character was named "Amalia", but in the movie, her charcter is "Klara Novak". And Jimmy Stewart's character in the musical is called "Georg Novak". This is why my head hurts.

Yes it's odd no one else has mentioned it. I'm glad you have. I think that most musicals based on movies tend to crudify their source material (e.g. "Sweet Charity," "9", "Chicago", Windy City") and although "She Loves Me" and "A Little Night Music" are honorable exceptions they are still comparatively heavy-handed when considered next to "The Shop Around The Corner" and "Smiles of a Summer Night".

Incidentally, I noticed there is one overlapping character name - Ilona is the second female lead in the show, and is the character played in the film by Inez Courtenay.
