Describe the ending please? I missed it! :( *spoiler*

I was watching this movie last night (Christmas Eve) and then my sister came over. Telling her to watch the ending with me, she sat down but then we started talking and I missed the ending! I know my husband missed the ending too, so I can't ask him.

Please, please, please let me know what happened. I got up to the part about....

*** Here be a spoiler ***

Mr Kraulik's talking to her about having met her 'pen pal' and how he's fat and out of a job. And they sit down on a little bench and she's kinda crying. After that I missed the rest of the dialogue and I know they hug & kiss at the end. What did they talk about? Did he reveal that he's her 'pen pal'?

Million thanks! I hope they pass it on tv again. :D James Stewart was so cute in this movie (and sexy)!

Obviously this reply will contain spoilers.

I think I saw it the same time you did, because it was on TCM on Christmas Eve. This movie was wonderful. Four stars.

It wouldn't be a Hollywood movie without the happy ending, and in this case the happy ending that everyone saw coming the minute Miss Novak sold her first item in the shop. Yes, Mr. Kralik and Miss Novak got together at the end. Mr. Matuschek, having left his wife, faces the prospect of a Christmas Eve alone until he finds out that the new delivery boy, Rudy, is from out of town with no family to go to, and describes the feast that awaits them as they leave for dinner at his favorite restaurant. (That is one of my favorite scenes.)

Fat, drunk, and stupid is no way to go through life, son.

(Mr. Matuschek, having left his wife and fired Pirovitch, faces the prospect of a Christmas Eve alone until he finds out that the new delivery boy, Rudy, is from out of town with no family to go to, and describes the feast that awaits them as they leave for dinner at his favorite restaurant.)

He didn't fire Pirovitch, he gave him a bonus and apologised for verbally abusing him. Jimmy Stewart fired Vadas, the rat. Pirovitch was going home for a quiet Christmas with his wife and children.

Yes, my mistake. I'll edit my post.

There's something different about you today, Mr. Laurio.

The ending is the best! When they get together, he mentions that he is not bow-legged like she once said. She says, Do you mind lifting your pants leg? He does and proves he's not bow-legged, she gives that classic gasp of happiness and they kiss/hug.

Excellent in its corniness and the reason it is one of my favorite movies of all time.

reply

Ah, thank you both! I saw him raise his pant legs, but I didn't understand why.

Such a cute ending, I must get that movie on DVD! :-D

you all miss the best line
she fell in love early on through the letters
after he fin ds out that she's his girl he tries to be nicer to see if she can fall for him in real life
she does
so he's telling her that letter-boy popkin is fat and ugly and out of a job and materialistic
and she's becoming thoroughly depressed because it's bad enough she can't have jimmy but now the man she's getting isn't the man she thought he was
so she satrts crying
and wants desperately to tell jimmy how she feels but can't
the energy is building and building and the tears are flowing
then
all of a sudden
jimmy takes maragaret by the shoulders and gently calls

- oh klara darling don't you know how desperately i wish you would take me out of post office box 273 take me out of my envelope and kiss me -

plants a beautiful deep kiss on her that makes her melt like butter

(that's the moment when my heart get caught in my throat and my stomach does somersaults every freaking time)

and then she realizes who he is
sees the flower in his lapel
and asks him to lift his pant legs
everyone gets to see his sock garters
they kiss again
and the movie ends with absolutely everything as it should be

positively absolutely beautiful

Everybody's forgotten Klara's wonderful response to Alfred:

"Psychologically, I'm very confused... But personally, I don't feel bad at all."

One of my favourite films. I bought the DVD online and it's coming in the mail tomorrow!

Despite the "happy ending", I don't see it as a typical "Hollywood ending". That scene is so painful, they have hurt each other very much at various times. Their fear turned into spiteful hate. They were in love with their literary alter-egos, ignoring that they should really be more like that in real life. So, when he reveals who is is, it's a very painful blend of joy, relief, shame and love.
I think young Jimmy Stewart is sexy anyways, but the chemistry between them is astounding. The ending is the A-bomb.
