Just caught the end of this, and really liked it... but what was the deal with his socks? Anybody?

He was proving that he wasn't bow-legged. In an earlier cafe scene, when Alfred and Klara are having a fight, they make personal attacks on each other. Klara has heard a rumor from a coworker that Alfred has his suits specially made to hide a non-existent deformity.
