Rub O' The Brush

This is how I've won numerous movie trivia questions: name the liquor served by Walter Brennan to Gary Cooper in The Westerner...

No one has ever gotten that one right; I love the shot that looks down on the bar where the booze seems to be eating through the varnish on the bar!

Nice. But is Rub o' the Brush the name of the liquor, or is it just a term for tipple, like saying "Hair of the Dog" or "A drop o' the hard stuff"?

reply

It's supposedly the "brand" that Brennan pours for Cooper. It would make a great label-design project!

reply

It is the name of that particular drink. Most obvious from the dialogue, and the fact that Hardin needed to ask the name---he knew it wasn't the usual whiskey served in bars.

What kinda brush ya reckon?

Could it be a basting brush, for applying BBQ sauce or rubs?

BBQ sauce often contains whisky, so there might be something to this.

And meat was usually treated with a seasoning when ranchers and cowboys
were on the trail, because it started to taste funny after a few days.
(This was when chili peppers became popular.)
