What happened to the housekeeper?

She started of with a lot of lines and I thought she was going to be one of the main characters, then she just disappeared! After the father announces they're moving she leaves and never returns with no explanation to her absence! (That I heard anyway)

Probably the victim of musical scripts! Despite the fun and excitement of MGM's classic musicals of the 1940s and 1950s, there were a lot rewrites and cuts made so as not to run too long, which resulted in characters and key sequences/dialogue disappearing!

Very true... in the instance of M.M.I.S.L. quite a few important scenes were cut to tighten the story and fit running time. Although, Katie missing in the end of the film never troubled be as after her final scene, nothing takes place that you'd expect her to be there for. It's never stated that she's a live-in servant, so she could hardly be expected to be there in the middle of the night Christmas Eve, and you wouldn't expect her to attend the fair with the family at the end, so I always found her absence totally understandable.

Quite a while later...Katie was in a Christmas scene. She convinced Lon Jr. and Rose to go to the dance together.
