A stage dagger? *SPOILERS*

Did I miss something? (I did miss a few minutes of the film during the section where Bill is setting up the 'fake waitress' scene.)

Why, and more importantly(!) how, does Anthony John kill himself? -- is it because he is gradually starting to remember what happened during that 'nightmare'? (He obviously doesn't remember it in detail at first, even if he does think it was only a nightmare, or he would have recognised the events in that newspaper story we know he read.) Is it because he is simply being worn down by the strain of his jealousy/confused identity and feels he can't take it any longer, or is it an explicit realisation of guilt?

And does he then at some point swap his normal 'prop' dagger for a real working replica (which would be quite hard to come by, I should have thought?) with the intention of killing himself on stage? When he tells Rita before their murder scene that he doesn't think he can go on, is it the prospect of the impending scene or of the suicide to follow that he dreads? In other words, is it supposed to be a spur-of-the-moment decision (and if so, how?) or a deliberately-staged act of atonement (and again, if so, how?)

Is it even supposed to be a dramatically convenient accident (and again, if so how?)
