IN THE PUBLIC DOMAIN

According to Wiki, a clerical error resulted in failure to renew this film's copyright, meaning that it's now in the public domain.
Doesn't that mean it could be butchered, or used in cheesy commercials and TV shows, or such like?
Makes me feel uneasy, mainly because I like this film very much and would hate to see it desecrated.
Ted Turner, where are you??

I just watched it on TCM (July 2023), and it looked great. However, none of the DVDs I've seen of it are any good. They're all low-definition, with faded colors. So far, it hasn't been released on Blu Ray. I don't know why a major Warner Bros. film has slipped into PD, but apparently it has.
