Allene Roberts

I notice no one ever mentions Allene Roberts, who played Meg. Since this is a 'coming of age' movie, and she is the protagonist, this is too bad, since her performance has the same kind of understated, quiet beauty that she does. Speaking of 'nuanced' -- her portrayal of Meg is expertly shaded, from the lonely 'outsider' at the beginning to boldly staking a claim to her adult status, to her disillusionment with her father. But even at her angriest, when she realizes how crazy Pete is and how his problems have held her back, she is still willing to forgive, showing that she is not only an adult in her newly-won 'rights', but an extraordinary human being in the depth of her capacity to love. Director Daves does some amazing things with makeup and lighting at various points that highlight her delicate loveliness -- again, subtly, not over-the-top, but it's Allene who 'runs with the ball'. Let's give Allene Roberts credit for the performance of a lifetime!
Baby, I don't care!

Did you notice the interesting lighting when Pete - now bonkers - is talking to her in the Red House? Her eyes only are illuminated with a slit of light, John Alton style "mystery lighting." It highlighted the interesting psychological tensions at play.

I love this film... it is one of my favorites. Strong performances all around; a cleaned up archival print needs to be made available on DVD.

I agree with you about Allene Roberts; hers was a different and interesting presence in film - such a tender innocence. She is truly lovely in this film, a great counterpoint to the sexiness of the marvelous Julie London. And the Lon McAllister/Rory Calhoun pairing is interesting, too. Much opportunity for analysis and comment with this deep film.

I thought Allene Roberts had pretty much disappeared off the face of the map. I once asked Eddie Mueller - film noir maven - if he knew of her doings or whereabouts, and he knew nothing. (Which is notable since he makes an effort to find film noir actresses.) She did an interview recently? I would be interested in reading it!

I have a cable TV show which runs old public domain movies (and serials). Saturday Night at the Movies is on Saturday night (duh) at 8 pm. You can see it streaming on www.wbmatv.com

On July 10, we'll be running The Red House, and as part of the movie recap, I'll be playing part of an interview I recently did with Allene Roberts. Check it out!

I most assuredly will! I love that film and am happy to hear that Ms. Roberts is still with us. I look forward to the interview!

The movie recap comes after the airing of the Red House? So the Roberts interview will be on at approximately 9:40 EDT?

reply

Just heard your interview... very cool! Her Alabama dialect is much more pronounced in the interview than in the movies, of course. 82 years old... she sounds like a wonderful lady.

How did you locate her whereabouts?

After Robinson, Roberts I thought was the best in the picture. She was not just beautiful, but did a fine job acting in this movie.
