I bought the 1.99 Wal-Mart bargain bin DVD edition, thinking that it looked suprisingly interesting, and for 1.99, I couldn't go wrong. Unfortunately, I got what I paid for.
I really liked it, I thought the characters were well done, the plot was tight and really suspenseful, and I was even ok with the really dark quality of the film (which made it a little hard to make out what was going on at times). BUT- just at the climax of the movie, right after Ellen gets shot and Meg is trying to call the doctor, the film stops. Like, it goes completely black, and then a moment later, it starts again, from the beginning!
I have no idea how it ended and no idea how to find out. At first I thought it was my DVD player, which was going a little wonky itself, but when I played the disk again last night, half a year later, I realized it was the disk. So, it's way too late to try to get a replacement (they're out of them).
Anyway, I was just wondering if anyone could spoil the ending for me? I would be really, really greatful. I've been dying to see how it ends for ages.

I just saw it last night. Meg runs back to the house to get Uncle Pete to do something, but he's sort of out of it. He's calling her "Jeannie" again and says it's too late for Ellen.

Meg is somewhat ignoring him and rings Nath. Nath says that he's going to call the sheriff and the doctor.

Meg runs back to the woods and is talking to Ellen. She regained consciousness and was telling Meg to take care of Uncle Pete and to pity him. Nath shows up with a makeshift stretcher, but Ellen passed away.

Nath says that he couldn't get ahold of the doctor but the sheriff is on his way. They carried her body back to the house and Uncle Pete was still out of it. Nath grabs a gun out of the closet to go after Teller.

They don't realize that Teller already has made it out of the woods, went over to the other girl's house and has convinced her to run away with him to alope.
The police catch them though. The girl starts crying and tells the police she didn't realize what was happening. They arrest Teller; but Nath doesn't know this.

Meg convinces Uncle Pete that they need to go into the woods to get Nath--because she loves Nath and that by helping her find Nath would be away to forive him for doing what he did to Jeannie. He admitted to her that he was having an affair with Jeannie and he went over to their red house to plead with her to leave the husband (they were planning on moving) and stay with him--and Jeannies husband caught wind of this--and as the husband was heading into the red house---Jeannie started to scream--Uncle Pete accidently suffocated her--and then shot the husband and ran off with the baby Meg.

So Uncle Pete and Meg are looking for Nath. Uncle Pete knows of a rugged road they can use to drive there. Uncle Pete shows Meg the red house and he starts freaking out remembering the horrible thing he did. He thinks Meg is Jeannie again and starts to suffocate her. Nath and the sheriff hears her screams---they bust down the door (Uncle Pete and deadbolted it)--Pete runs out of the house into the car. He drives sraight into the ice house and drowned in the river.

IN the end you see Nath and Meg happy together looking over the lake---talking about how it's their land now.

The end!

Don't forget to add that they were standing there watching a cloud of smoke in the distance. Nath had set fire to the Red House as part of his and Meg's new life together.

He could have started a major forest fire, but I guess the screenwriters didn't think of that.

I was glad to find this ending here too. I also purchased one of these faulty DVD's. Mine came from Fred's and was only $0.50, so I wasn't burned as bad as the other guy. In fact, the $0.50 really doesn't mean anything; it's the left hanging at the last 15 minutes that got me.

I see that swapping the DVD would do no good. Obviously this whole batch was bad.

I bought from Amazon a collection of 25 murder & mystery films, and the version of Red House on it was also bad. It goes black just after Nat brings Meg back from the forest where she broke her leg.

I got this movie as part of a collection of 100 suspense and mystery movies, and I didn't have any problems with it at all.

Such a great movie! I wish the sound quality was better, but for a sixty year old movie, it wasn't half bad. Edward G Robinson was a greater actor than I gave him credit for, and I decided if I could time travel, I'd go back for Rory Calhoun!!
