Why was it cut down to 80 minutes?

I just finished watching the movie, which I very much enjoyed, and went to read the comments of others. After reading the reviews, I was disappointed to know I had seen an edited down version. Anyone know why they cut it down to the shorter length?

I'm sorry I can't answer your question, but I have both versions (first bought edited one, mistakenly) and feel that whatever was deleted was essential to character development and plot.

How long is your unedited version?

Hi Alicia, we just watched the 95 minutes version (ordered it from eBay in great quality), but even though I've watched this film noir as the cut version multiple times, I could not notice any NEW scenes in the 95 minutes version.
I hope you can tell me what exactly has been added. Thanks!

Hi, Waldepond88. I have seen the full version as well as an edited version. The full version has a scene in which Young is driving Susan Hayward home from work and a scene in which Robert Young is with his wife and Susan Hayward is with her boss (Young's partner) at a piano concert. They exchange looks during the concert and at intermission the two couples make chit chat. I don't want to say any more than that, because I don't want to spoil it for you, in case you get to see it in its entirety.

TCM just showed this movie today, 3.30.12 in the cut down 80 minute version.

edits can be deadly (in the film exhibition sense, not the noir sense; so, no pun intended this time), but it didn't seem to matter significantly as far as this flik goes. however, every effort should be made to get a copy of the ORIGINAL film at its ORIGINAL length in the TCM library.

I just saw it today as well. I saw it maybe 7 years ago, and parts were cut short or out, as well as I can recall. That's what gets my goat. If they can play the film commercial free, then why can't they play the unedited version??!!? It's maddening!

Especially since TCM keeps claiming that they show all their movies uncut!
Recently I watched "Five Miles to Midnight" which I watched several times late on German TV, but the most important and most thrilling scene was cut.

I believe that TCM means in it's statement of showing movies uncut that "they" do not cut them, as any other station has the option to do (and which is often done).

I wish they could get a copy of the uncut version. But reading this and the other thread here in the message board about how often the cut version has been show, I have to believe that for their Summer of Darkness Film Noir Festival, they would have gotten the best version that they could have. This isn't to say an english PAL version isn't out there, just not one they can show, perhaps for a reason.

I have the Image Entertainment / Turner Home Video NTSC laserdisc of this film (released in 1990). The feature runs approximately 94 minutes, despite mislabeling on the jacket. I really prefer the full length version - and know that Turner has access to a full length print. I will admit that there are some rough spots in a couple of reels, but not enough to warrant just cutting the film.

I just did some online research on this film as I'm still trying to find the 95 (or even 97) minutes version.
Supposedly the 15 to 17 minutes have been removed, because they were considered immoral (sp?) at the time.

I just read that it was cut down to fit as a double bill.
