To say the least, this show had pretty eratic ratings, which isn't that shocking, the audience share varied from episode to episode, peaking at 70 Million in some cases, but also sometimes ending up a lot lower. Any thoughts?

According to a new book about the show, "Right Here on Our Stage Tonight," written by Gerald Nachman, 'The Ed Sullivan Show' was in 43rd place during its final season. I thought you'd like to know.
I suspect it finished out of the Top 30 during the 1958-59 season because of the competition from 'Maverick' on ABC, which was very popular for a while during the TV Western craze. But 'Maverick' didn't have Ed's staying power.
