Cinematography visuals - the color saturation - beautiful

I don't know anything about film cinematography, but this movie has such a vibrant color saturation (maybe its just the red shoes? They rival the shoes in the Wizard of Oz) that I *have* to watch it again and again to marvel at its beautiful aesthetics. Oh, that and the music, plot, characters. All enchanting.

Well most of the credit goes to cinematographer, Jack Cardiff--one of--if not THE--greatest cinematographers who ever lived. His early color work from the 1940s is legendary.

Check out his work on 1947's Black Narcissus: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cLoNFaxugkU

And the art director, Hein Heckroth. Jack & Hein worked very closely together. Hein was awarded the Oscar but shamefully Jack wasn't even nominated for some of his most beautiful work.

Jack had won the Oscar the previous year for Black Narcissus and the story is that the Academicians didn't want to risk him (as a foreigner) winning it twice in successive years. If he had been nominated he probably would have won
