Moira Shearer's Red Hair

Was there ever an actress that had such beautiful red hair? I always thought Maureen O'Hara in The Quiet Man had that title but Shearer's passed her. Does anyone know how true her hair color was in the movie to real life? I know the Criterion DVD accents the reds but all the pictures I've seen of her show that flaming red hair. I would be shattered if it turns out she got it from a bottle.

Moira Shearer's hair was the most beautiful flaming red, not touched up or out of a bottle. She was justifiably famous for the beauty of her hair.

reply

Yes, even more dramatic in real life. I watched her dancing a lot when I was a teenager, mad on ballet. Her hair, her expressive face, her skin, her body, her personality were as breathtaking as the precision of her dancing. I don't think you would call it flaming red, however - it had richer, deeper, coppery lights in it. Lovely woman, with a personality to match - not a trace of "side" and apparently quite unable to understand why people thought she was so remarkable.

Saw the film again tonight for the first time in about 8 years & had forgotten how brilliantly red the hair was.
What struck me even more was how, at times, there is such a strong resemblance between Moira and Debra Messing; particularly in the scenes where Moira is being very casual.

I have died my red hair for years, trying to get what Moira Shearer had in this film.

One thing to keep in mind is that Powell/Pressburger were known for their otherworldly and ethereal cinematography so that all of the colors in their films are more striking and vibrant than will ever be possible in real life. It is part of what makes all their films so long-lived and thrilling.

aside from being a fan of ballet, classical music, stage design and literature, i'm also a lover of redheads, and moira shearer's gorgeous red locks is the first and last thing i love about this movie.
i'm assuming she was a natural redhead, and that whatever embellishes were incorporated into the colourings in the film (pre or post-production) didn't do too much to alter her (or anybody else's) appearance.

Moira Shearer was in a film,"The Man Who Loved Redheads" -- a very nice piece of work, but not available on VHS or DVD, for some strange reason.

Believe me, her hair color is real. I saw her at a number of ballet performances and even have an autographed photo of her and Michael Somes (performing Giselle) .. and she was very kind to a little kid who just started ballet (me).

It's interesting that Marius Goring has (sandy) red hair as well -- much less attractive on a man, of course!

I can't imagine that anyone would deliberately dye his hair that colour; was it a career handicap for him in any way?

Michael Powell was fond of redheads. Quite a few of his leading actresses, and a few of his leading actors, had red hair. Deborah Kerr & Roger Livesey to name but two. In his autobiography Powell said that a redhead's nerves were nearer the surface so they made good actors

Dear Steve:

You're quite right. I wonder if any of his wives were redheads. In the 1960 film "Peeping Tom" quite a few of the actresses were redheads - Maxine Audley, Anna Massey, as well as Moira herself.

reply

I wonder if any of his wives were redheads

I don't think so. I've never seen a photo of his first wife, Gloria Mary Rouger. They were only married for a few weeks.

His second wife, Frankie Reidy, the mother of his two sons, doesn't look like a red-head in any of the photos or film I've seen of her (but many are in B&W (like her appearance in The Edge of the World)

His third wife, Thelma Schoonmaker, was already white-haired by the time she married Powell in 1984. Working with Scorsese will do that to you 

But you should look at his girlfriends as well as his wives.
Powell had long affairs with Deborah Kerr, Kathleen Byron and Pamela Brown
Only one of those qualifies as a copper-top

So he liked them as actors rather than as personal partners

Remember that he also used Roger Livesey & Marius Goring in quite a few films.

When filmed right, Red Hair looks so beautiful and dramatic on film. Powell loved rich almost hallucinatory color in The Red Shoes.

Shearer's hair is the focus of so many shots.

Remember that he also used Roger Livesey & Marius Goring in quite a few films.

It's funny but I never pegged Goring as a red head. In this film he always struck me as a dark blond.

Why is red hair much less attractive on a man??

reply

Possibly because they don't get to wear the brightly-coloured clothes to show it off? Or the heavy make-up to emphasise it?In men it tends to be the 'natural' sandy/carrots colour that gets people teased at school, with pale lashes plus all-over freckles as accompaniment (think about the amount of time Katherine Hepburn allegedly spent covering up her freckles). Red-headed beauty is pretty high maintenance, and I don't think men generally bother with all that fuss.Interestingly, Benedict Cumberbatch, who is a striking natural red-head with much the same colouring as my own brother, has had his hair dyed for most of his roles.http://img1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20130203231436/bakerstreet/images/b /b0/Benedict-Cumberbatch.jpgOther talented red-headed actors of note: Charles Dancehttp://4.bp.blogspot.com/-r4Rvp9CJvsg/TyOrB-9yQmI/AAAAAAAACjA/2g-Oap8L 6Hw/s1600/000000Z.jpgDamien Lewishttp://www.fansshare.com/gallery/photos/10713934/damian-lewis-wallpape r/~~Igenlode, who still has red hair in the familyGather round, lads and lasses, gather round...

Lol! You're a dolt. I love redheads, and last I checked men are allowed to wear any colour they choose.

Check out Marketa Hrubesova in Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk (1992); here, too, her flaming red hair seems like an expression of her personality.

reply

She was absolutely gorgeous!

Her beauty alone could have made her a big Hollywood star if she had ever wanted that.

reply

She was amazing, a wonderful dancer and a great beauty. I'm so glad they made this film and continue to show it.

Forget her hair (which was beautiful, though), look at HER EYES! Moira had one of the most beautiful eyes I've ever seen, Even prettier than Vivian Leigh's eyes.

Big, beautiful, expressive eyes.

reply

From what I've read, Vivien Leigh's eyes were actually 'enhanced' in Gone With The Wind.

reply

Well...........they used two pin lights to make Vivien Leigh's blue eyes look green "without a hint of hazel" as Margaret Mitchell specified in GWTW.

reply

Yup. Her ginger glory is only surpassed by Nicole Kidman in Moulin Rouge!
