Barbara was really nasty in this movie!!!

She's such a good actress, she actually made me dislike her in this movie. The clothes and jewelry she wears in this movie are gorgeous!!!

Agreed yet no matter how evil she was throughout the film, she was still willing to make amends with her husband -- unfortunately it was "a day late, a dollar short."

I felt a bit sad for her in the ending but man oh man what a great performance in those final minutes. And that added "sorry wrong number" line. Classic!

Just goes to show ya' its better when you sit down and discuss things.... Yet is must be argued, when he tried this before, again and again, he didn't get very far....

I guess I might see more clearly if I had a night on the phone like she did, and my murderer was coming up the stairs

Barbara Stanwyck always made her characters interesting to watch, good or bad. You do (pardon the cliche)love to hate Leona, but there is a degree of complexity and sympathy to the character. She's spent her life getting everything she wants, but by movie's end she wonders if it was all worth it, alienating all those around her with her spoiled, take-no-prisoners attitude.

~ Barbara Stanwyck gave an excellent performance. Even I couldn't stand her character at times, especially when she kept controlling her husband. But I pity her in the end.

I liked "Sally Hunt" and when Barbara had to just say Sally's name and out it came, with such distain....it was perfect....

I had the opportunity to see SORRY, WRONG NUMBER in the movies last summer. Barbara Stanwyck was really good in her part as was Burt Lancaster. As for Barbara Stanwyck's character, Leona, I felt that although she was not supposed to be likable, the movie did justice to her character. In other words, we got to see through flashbacks what her background was and why she came to be someone who was used to getting her way. Does anyone else agree? Incidentally, xylonian-1 mentioned the character Sally Hunt in the film. The film showed that character's side too so we got to see that her character tried to help Leona in her own way.

she's a high strung pain in the ass to everyone, not just her husband.

reply

My goodness, what a controlling bitch. I think I would have even had her killed. Loved the ending though, not what I expected.

reply

I wouldn't have minded being controlled by her.

As selfish as she was (and boy oh boy, she sure was), she does show quite a bit of compassion and empathy when it comes to the intended victim. Let's face it, many of her calls are an effort to thwart the crime and save the woman, so I do think there's a heart in there somewhere. Too bad about it being her! :-)

reply

Excellent point. She seemed so desperate in her please to the operator and the police about someone being murdered and they needed to do all they can to save her. She worried so much it totally stressed her to the point of becoming sicker, in her mind of course.

reply

Sure Leona had been devious but she also had good qualities. I was quite surprised Leona was killed in the climax, it didn't feel justified.

Lol...last minute, with her life in jeopardy, she would say anything...wouldn't she.

You can bet...if she'd survived...she gone back to her manipulative behavior.

I had such difficulty getting into this film. I found her character soo overly hysterical and annoying! In the opening scenes, she was a gratingly shrill nag, who loved to hear herself complain! I think it was hard for me to buy her character because I've always seen her in her stronger, clever, independent female roles.

The way she kept going on in the beginning about her husband not being home reminds me of that Seinfeld episode where that obnoxious woman at the party keeps going on and on about her fiancé, "I wonder what happened to my fiancé? I know he's here somewhere. Have you seen my fiancé? Please tell my fiancé I'm looking for him. I have lost my fiancé!"

I thought you came up here to have a nervous breakdown. ..I decided not to have one.

reply

She wasn't supposed to be a likable character. Her hubby had enough of her and that's why he plotted to have her murdered.

I wasn't talking about her being likeable or not. I was talking about the portrayal of the character. To me, the character was not real, it was just an actress saying lines on film.

As I stated, I have seen Barbara in strong female roles. To see her play a weak and annoying character wasn't believable for me.
