Why didn't the police..... ? (spoiler)

OK, if the police knew about the drug ring, the plot, Henry Stevenson's involvement, etc., why didn't they have an officer at the house to keep Leona from being killed?

Cops have been lazy bums a long time, in the original play he was too busy eating an apple turnover to listen to her story.

If you pay attention in the movie, the police had no way of knowing about the planned murder. When Leona calls the police it is to say that she overheard a conversation and some lady somewhere in New York is going to be killed. The policeman asks her, and she specifically says it is not her. The police know that Henry has been stealing and selling stolen goods through Morano, but they know nothing of murder. The question should be once Leona knew she was the target, or once Henry decided to warn her, why didn't one of them call the police. Answers include they were stupid, didn't think of it, panicked, it's a movie etc...
