There were several people who drove by when the car had the flat tire. Why weren't any of these people notified to testify when Brian Donlevy went to trial? Also the men in the moving truck could have testified that it wasn't him who got into the car and drove it into the truck. He could have been immediately cleared of murder had they testified.

He kept insisting Jim was a random hitchhiker, which is what made the police suspicious. Why did he lie? There was no reason to hide the fact that his wife had asked him to give Jim a ride. In a slapstick comedy, plot holes can be ignored. In this kind of movie, you need a plot that makes sense.
