This one's a real grinder.....

I saw this film a couple of years ago, but I have little memory of it.

I am trying to watch it here tonight and I have stopped twice.

The film was fine while it was in England, but now out in the desert, I am bored.

Another late Weird Welles appearance.
The woman is bizarre - got some great freeze frames as she looks pixie-ish
Power got a cool hair cut.
Jack Hawkins is saving this film for me.

Glad to see the immortal team of Bobby Blake and Alfonso Bedoya together again for the first time since they appeared in THE TREASURE OF THE SIERRA MADRE.

OK - back to the show. I am watching a 20 year old EP speed VHS tape copy from KTTV Channel 11 in Los Angeles in 1987 with commercial breaks announcing the debuts of THE TRACEY ULLMAN SHOW and MARRIED WITH CHILDREN. Likely not helping.

No, you need to rent the DVD to see this properly. I just posted on another thread where people were being kind of nasty about this poor film. As I said there, as I caught it again over the years and tried to get into it, I found it's actually not a bad little film at all. More cerebral, as I called it, than Power's other swashbucklers, short on action compared to other such films, but that shouldn't necessarily make it "bad". Watch the DVD (at least the sound, picture and continuity will be better than your tape!), set aside your current notions of the movie and try to accept it on its own terms. Not a great film, but it does have its merits, and I long since came to find it surprisingly enjoyable if you give it a real chance.

I'll keep that in mid, but so far it is a bit of a misfire - and I think my copy has tv station edits.

*Best thing in the film so far is Power's reaction - I guess he is talking to OW - and he says - "Well, what am *I* doing here?" and his body language and facial expression is like Art Carney on the HONEYMOONERS! Shrugs his shoulders, sticks his arms out and thrusts his face forward. So funny.

OK - gonna try and finish it off tonight.

Thanks for the post.

Tape jammed in the machine! I'll take that as a warning omen.

Those old tapes are heavier and I don't think modern VCRs handle them well. This is not the first time an older tape has caused a problem.

Just got notified of your post tonight, the email two weeks late. This has been happening a lot lately, mostly about IMDb notifications. Anyway....

Hope you got the tape out. More reason to try it on DVD. Whatever else, it'll be less aggravating!

Another thing best appreciated on DVD is the great Jack Cardiff's magnificent color cinematography. At the very least THE BLACK ROSE is a good-looking picture. I really hope you'll find more to it with a second (dare I say even a third?) viewing. Cheers!

Thanx - it is still in the machine - i have not had the time to fuss with it.

Don't worry, the movie will be there when you get to it.

Merry Christmas.

Finally got the VCR repaired. Tape was thrashed.

After only six months? It's an omen to move to DVD, after which you can rent our movie here and see it properly -- unthrashed.

It took me six months to try and fix it myself and then capitulate and take it to the repair shop, where they fixed it in 6 days and then it took me 6 days to pick it up where it sat in the trunk of my car for 2 weeks, now sitting on the table for one week.
