The racism
Wow, the blatant racist comments made by Richard Widmark in this movie were painful to watch. This is the oldest movie I've even seen to confront the subject head-on like it does. I found Linda Darnell's character very believable, as a poor white who has always seen blacks as inferior, but when she actually gets to know some black people she begins to see for herself that what she's been taught is not right.
