Evil

Did anyone else think Paulette was slightly evil? She scared me a little.

reply

You're confusin innocence with evil...

reply

Evil? Seriously?

reply

Such a fine line between innocence and evil. Where do good intentions or lack of knowledge cross over into evil or at least the endorsement of it?

reply

No. She was dealing with grief, loss, loneliness and fear with the innocence of a child. If anything, she reviled killing, and only wanted to keep her dog (a stand-in for her parents) safe from the rain and accompanied by friends (the confused logic of a child, not malevolence).

reply

Evil? As in Hillary Clinton evil? Nah, she was an innocent sweet little girl.

reply

Innocence and childhood is often mistaken for evil, but their honesty and life is light years ahead of grownups fumbling about in illusion in how to be and what to do. JM Barrie had it spot on when he described children as "innocent and heartless and gay".

No, I think she is more George W. Bush evil.(I mean really, if you can stretch so far as to drop Hillary's evilness into this conversation, I should be able to bring up some BIG TIME evil.)And Paulette constantly got poor Michel in trouble by nagging him to get bigger and prettier crosses for her little graves. Also, when her mom and dad were killed, it didn't seem to bother her that much. (That poor little dying dog sure got to me though; that was totally uncalled for.) Yeah, this little girl grew up a few years and was obviously typecast for the starring role in THE DEMON SEED. Little Paulette was very cute but very sinister too.

reply

Yes, not evil. Innocent coping.
But in the DVD extras, the adult Brigitte Fossey does call her character a little Lady Macbeth.

reply

yes, she scared me too. it was something in her eyes. and her reactions were unpredictable for me.

reply

Geez, the poor girl lost her family and only had a dead dog to love. Give her a break! :) I mean, she hated the boy killing a cockroach...I assume any evil you see in her reactions was the intense trauma of all the crap that happened to her.

reply

There is definitely a evil sense being hinted at. She is portrayed as possibly being from an atheist family as she said she didn't know what a cross was and knew no prayers, this in a highly religious era. Though I disagree heartily with this opinion... most religious people consider atheists evil, sigh. There is certainly a bit of that in the film.

***So I've seen 4 movies/wk in theatre for a 1/4 century, call me crazy?**

"I found her thoroughly annoying. I found the movie to be somewhat difficult to watch because of her simpering and whining."

Are you sure about what movie you watched? Did it star Tom Cruise and have alien war machines with tentacles zappin' people?
