Ruth Roman

She was attractive, but couldn't act. Too often she emoted with her mouth without moving the rest of her face. Once in a while, briefly, she became more natural in this movie, but most of the time she looked stiff.

Almost certainly, she was following Hitchcock's instructions. Hitchcock often wanted his actors to play deadpan. Ruth Roman gave quite different performances in other films. I suggest you look at two of her Westerns, The Far Country and Great Day In The Morning.

Farley and Robert Walker were wonderful, so I loved the film.

___Honestly,I could never get past Ruth Romans performance in this film. Eiher she was miscast, or she over played the part. Maybe it should have been a Hitchcock blonde, but that would have upstaged his daughter. Maybe that was the essential problem, Hitchcock, the star maker, which never jelled. Pat really had no star quality. On the other hand. I have never seen Roman so wooden. At times, she came off as a brunette Marilyn Monroe, though I love Monroe. But, only Marilyn can be Monroe.

she has subtle grace.
