The Howard Hawks woman

Nikki, in this film is another example of the beautiful, stylish, take no nonsense Hawks woman, found in so many of his films. Her hair, makeup and clothes resemble the looks of Hawk's wife Slim. She married Hawks in 1941 and is the one that spotted Lauren Bacall in a fashion magazine and suggested he give her a screen test.

Still think it's strange how Margaret Sheridan gets top billing in the credits when clearly Kenneth Tobey was the lead.

She does NOT seem to be at an arctic base but rather table-hopping at Ciro's. I think you are on to something. She is always 'draping herself becomingly' on a piece of furniture.

In the biography of Howard Hawks, the author points out that Mr. Hawks thought that Margaret Sheridan would become a big star in films, but, I believe, she took time off from her acting career to get married and have children before returning to the acting profession.

As a result, Mr. Hawks believed that her time had unfortunately passed as a potential big box ofice attraction.
