This film has many compelling themes and messages

Two women competing for the love of a loner sheriff. One is an incredibly beautiful WASP and the other a Mexican of most likely mixed race. It was the latter who gave her competitor the key to the sheriff's affections. Would Will Kane have led a more contented life with a Mexican wife? The loyal brother of the released vengeful Frank Miller is the first to die in the shootout with Kane. This film to me has notable insight into the tragic nature of love, familial loyalty, duty and courage.

Dig deeply into this film and you will find great insight into the tragic nature of human evolution.

Insightful comments pooles-1. I agree with what you are saying here. So many layers to this great movie. I would say that all these human traits evolved early in our evolution and must have had a purpose in perpetuating the species. Unfortunately, these traits strongly persist in modern humans and may not be as important as they once were. Yes, these innate characteristics of the human condition often lead to tragic consequences.

We have to jettison tribal loyalties for sure and like the Greeks suggested go with an abstract ethos as a guide for behavior.
I have no tribal loyalties (no religious or political affiliation), no loyalty to region, race, creed, ethnic group, school, union creed or whatever only to an ethos which I believe is necessary to keep humans from self extinguishing. I refer to myself as a clueless hetero earthling and even that description is pathetically provincial.
