Anybody ever been to Cong?

I was there about 20 years ago. A charming little Irish town, still. Of course they make their living on the 'Quiet Man Crazies' but why shouldn't they?

We were just there in November and it was just grand!

I was there this past summer on a bike tour. It still looks very much the same as the scenes in the film. Lovely town. The milestone is still there. Ashford Castle is a little tarted up now though.

I understand. Thank you for telling me. -The masked bandit

Hoping to get back there sometime soon myself. My husband had never seen the Quiet Man until we married and now he really would like to visit Ireland, meet my relatives, and see Cong. Glad to know it still carries its charm well.

I'll be there on Sep 14, 2015, and am looking forward to it. I'm taking a 15 day group tour of Scotland and Ireland, and then doing seven days on my own afterwards. During the latter part of my trip I'll visit Cong. So I guess I'll officially become a "Quiet Man Crazy." :-)

Later I'll visit Pennan, Scotland, the tiny fishing village where they filmed part of "Local Hero". That's another one of my favorite films.

I'll let everyone know how it was after I return.

I hope you enjoy it! The Quiet Man is one of my all time favorite movies. My husband had never seen it until we started together. It was running in a vintage theater (with a balcony and an organ!). So I took him to see it there. It has since become one of his favorite movies, too.

Enjoy your trip.

So......How much did you love it?

I haven't been to Cong but I've been to Westport, which is also County Mayo and about one hour north of Cong (I was visiting where my ancestors were from)... this was in 2004 when I was only 19 years old - it was my first time outside of the U.S. and I absolutely adored it.

We drove through Cong about 12 years ago on a visit to Ireland. The only place I recognized was Cohan's pub. We just drove through and did not stop. Pretty countryside but a little bit of a drive from Galway.

I really LOVED it!! I enjoy visiting sites where movies were filmed, and this was one of the best. I even took a guided tour which was grand!

Not Cong, but in '85 I took a bike trip and part of it went from Galway into Co Connemara w/ my future wife and my sisters. we were all big QM fans, but as of then still had never bought a VHS copy of it, so hadn't seen it too often.

the internet movie database was still 5 years away so one had to dig pretty hard to find actual locations of films beyond the general notes in the credits.

I had no plan to try to find QM locations, we wanted to see the west, Arans, down into Clare and Killarney and take our time.

Cruising west, it was overcast and I spotted hills and rock walls after we'd stopped at castle Augnanure and checked it out.

I announced to my companions "WOW, this is where they filmed Quiet Man!" From the road I spotted the stone bridge in the film near "white o morn".

I was met with derision and incredulity, of course, what are the odds?

I was convinced, however. We rode on and got to Maam Cross. Of course, I'd not known the film well enough then to recognize the name of the place, but there was a tourist trap with a sign up announcing filming locations in the area... AHA, vengeance is mine, how dare you doubt me!

We biked back and I got a photo of me grabbing my girlfriend's wrist and hauling her in for a kiss like the early scene with Mary Kate... On the bridge.

I love this! Good for you for knowing your QM locales, and better yet hauling in your now-wife for that wonderful Mary Kate kiss! I have made my husband a fan of The Quiet Man (he'd never seen it until we met 17 years ago). Now he totally wants to go to Cong and recite all the lines. Ooooh, ya traitor ya!!

I hope you get to go back again.
