Great Movie and Great Book

I read this book (by Brickhill) many years ago and it was one of my favorites. I just watched the movie and I thoroughly enjoyed that as well. I realize that it isn't possible to incorporate every concept of a book into a movie but I felt that they missed a very important aspect of the development of the bomb when they failed to address the shape of the bomb and the important realization that causing it to rotate prior to being released would solve their problems. Obviously they did solve the problems of the bombs breaking up in the movie but one might get the impression that they did it simply by making them with thicker casings which was not the way it was. The initial test failures were such an important part of the bombs evolution and were a major part of the film but I felt that they simply swept the solution under the rug and solved it by having Wallis say "I'll figure it out" and lo and behold he does. It would have taken one scene and perhaps 2 or 3 minutes to incorporate this, IMO, very important piece of the puzzle.

Still, as I said, it was a very good movie and had I not had the knowledge I gained from the book I wouldn't have even noticed.

One other thing that I seem to recall from the book (and I may be confusing it with another book on this)is that they made a much bigger deal about the defense guns and the recon flights in the book. I seem to recall something about a major addition to the defense batteries that initially caused a great deal of concern. Again, no big deal in the movie but to someone who read the book I would have at least liked to have seen that issue addressed.

I give the movie an 8 (and the book a 10)

Regarding the shape of the Upkeep and it's method of operation, you have to remember that when the film was made the weapon was still classified secret. I'm sure many people did know the details but couldn't incorporate them or they would have had some decent chaps from Special Branch calling to see them! I think Upkeep was declassified in 1963 or thereabouts, at any rate I can remember Revell produced a model of the Dambuster Lancaster with the weapon accurately depicted.
