original 1955 movie

When I first saw this movie in about 1956, there was a scene, when the dams were being attacked, of a Catholic priest realising what was about to happen. He then tolls the church bell as a warning until he, his church and the bell is washed away. This is apparenly based on a church bell being found downstream. This scene is no longer in present version on DVD of the 1955 movie. Has anyone any idea of why this scene has been removed?

This movie reached iconic status after the war and then many fekt that it should not be seen as such because of all the innocent civillian lives lost. Has this anything to do with the removal of this scene?
