Maybe not so gross. Did nobody notice that the bedroom had two single beds so obviously a young nubile girl didn't sleep with the decrepit old bastard. My wife is 20 years younger than me so I suppose that makes me a perv.

It was quite common at that time to portray married couples sleeping in separate beds. It was believed showing them in one bed was suggestive, as in obscenely suggestive. Yes, it was illogical. But mores can often be illogical.

There is nothing illegal or immoral about a relationship between a woman in her twenties and a man in his forties (or the other way around). They are both consenting adults, so if they're happy, that's all that matters. It's none of anybody else's business.
