Too slow, too long and too little happens.

It didn't blow me away. Great cast, great setting, great idea but the script wasn't tight enough.

I can't agree. It's one of my favourite old classics.

I have to agree. I really didn't like this film.

For one thing, why doesn't Lars just look straight ahead and spot LB staring right at him? LOL!

It's just silly for him to look right, look left, but never look straight at the guy checking him out from his window. Whole movie is laughable and I usually like Hitchcock. Ohh well... better luck next time.

then go watch a superhero movie and kindly leave the common folk enjoy a masterpiece

you triggered mister argentino? not big surprise

It's a classic slow burn film and that doesn't go down well with modern audiences and their reduced attention span.

Yes, if there isn't an explosion, or a robot car that talks, they lose interest after three minutes.

I thought the tension build throughout was marvelous, personally, with the stakes constantly rising. I even wanted to know what was going to happen with all the little "mini-stories" scattered throughout the courtyard setting - the musician and Ms. Lonely Hearts and so forth.

But the main plot was, I thought, full of tension. I'd definitely push back on the script not being tight enough. The opening shot is one of the most economical I've ever seen, giving a full backstory and character analysis for LB just by panning around the room.

Plus! the side characters are all memorable and how they all get drawn into his snooping, spying world. Also great is how Hitchcock keeps you guessing between whether or not the investigation is all paranoia. There's the claustrophobia of LB being trapped in the room, unable to help his fellow sleuths...it's great.

The pacing is perfect, the length was just right, and plenty happened. They used to make movies for grownups.

I've seen it two more times since I made this thread (one with the audio commentary on and again when the 4k UHD came out). I like it more now.
