Vera Ellen's Anorexic Appearance is Nauseating in This Movie!

She looks like a concentration camp survivor in this film, and it's sickening!

Why didn't they replace her? She clearly had some MAJOR problems!

reply

Why didn't they replace her? Because she's an amazing dancer!!

reply

There were many amazing dancers, most of who didn't have 18-inch waists and bulging adam's apples that needed to to be covered with various scarves, turtlenecks, and necklaces.

She looks revolting throughout the film.

reply

Among the female dancers who would have been considered "stars" when White Christmas was filmed in late 1953, Vera-Ellen was the only one who could have pulled off all the routines that were called for. I wish the late choreographer Bob Alton was still around to corroborate. As for the never ending anorexia controversy, all I can say is that, yes, she was too thin at this time. But she was still gorgeous!! I'll take V-E anyway she comes--plump, thin, or in-between.

reply

Her appearance is a little unsettling, especially in a couple of the dance outfits that show just how thin she was, such as, what she wore in "Mandy" and in the "Abraham" number.

But, her dancing is nothing short of phenomenal. And she had a nice presence and personality throughout the picture. She really was wonderful in the part. I never get tired of watching her in "The Best Things Happen While You're Dancing" - all the little moves and touches she includes are truly masterful and it's so beautiful to see.

reply

Give me a break! She is far from nauseating. Yes, she's frighteningly thin, but she's still a beautiful, amazingly talented presence in this movie. And she was one of the top female dancers at that time -- perfectly suited for the role and I can't think of many others whose dancing style would've lent itself to the athletic routines in the movie.

She had a rather sad life and never got nearly the credit she deserved in Hollywood while she was alive.

Like the other poster said, why not watch and enjoy all the marvelous things in this movie rather than making such overdramatic complaints about a perfectly lovely woman? This movie wouldn't have been nearly as charming without her.

"Don't dream it, be it."

reply

You listen here christopher greenleaf how dare you take the piss of the lovely criminally underated dancer. I am sick and tired of people like you who are always commenting on the suppose anorexia of Vera-Ellen. I dont care what anyone say's she is the best dancer in hollywood's golden age. Why can't people just think of her as a fantastic underated versatile dancer.

reply

Christopher greenleaf why do you think it is okay to make fun of Vera-Ellen. You disgust me, how do you think it is okay to mock someone with an mental illness, it is not right. The amount of pain you go through with anorexia is dreadful, while people like Vera-ellen who have been suffering from anorexia. and you are there sitting on your backside laughing and make fun of them. You should be hanged. Do you want to know something, there is a 1950s Hollywood reporter called Mike Connolly who said... Vera-Ellen should be awarded a special Oscar for being the worst dressed of screen actress in Hollywood. Sadly Vera-Ellen took criticism seriously and at the beginning of her career the press and the onscreen producer's said Vera-Ellen was pudgy. So that is why Vera-Ellen sadly had anorexia from criticism from horrible people. it is not right. One last thing... There is stupid rumours about Vera-Ellen's neck had to be covered during the filming of white christmas. THAT IS NOT TRUE i tell you why because after the filming of white christmas about 1 week after in an interview Vera-Ellen had a dress which showed her beautiful neck, there was nothing wrong with it, anorexia is not something that appears overnight. The reason why Vera-Ellen's necked was covered was because she liked things around her neck such as necklaces, ribbons, chuffles, and clothes with long neck because they suit her lovely self. SO FUCK OF CHRISTOPHER AND I HOPE YOU WILL FEEL GUILT FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE!

reply

She was a beautiful woman and great dancer although I object to her singing voice being dubbed.

reply

She makes those dazzling legs sing.

reply

Really not fair to criticize a person with a serious eating disorder. Particularly when you consider that she made this film over 50 yrs ago and she has long since died!

She was an amazing dancer! Undeniably talented! She is particularly amazing in "On The Town" with Gene Kelly. Vera-Ellen matches the great Kelly step for step!

Anorexia was not even a recognized disorder in 1953. That added with the pressure and rigors required for becoming a professional dancer (not to mention any personal psychological neuroses Miss Ellen would have had) would have made it impossible for her to get any help at all.

Instead of criticizing her appearance michaeljcarey, you should perhaps just enjoy the fact that a phenomenally talented performer contributed to a holiday classic that is still enjoyed to this very day. OR -

You can always pop in "Ernest Saves Christmas" and enjoy something more on your intellectual level.

reply

My mother tells me she was anorexic in her early 20's, to the point of gorging herself at lunchtime and then forcing herself to vomit and weighing about 95-100 lbs for a coupla years. But since it was the late 40's, there was no place to turn. One assumes Vera-Ellen didn't have anyplace to turn, either.

Hear, hear!

I couldn't agree more! Wonderful in this film (even with her perhaps too-revealing costumes in some scenes).

Ah! Miss Turnstiles! On The Town is a great picture and she did go toe-to-toe and step-for-step with Gene Kelly!

reply

Look, who says the poster was criticizing "the person"? We're talking about a motion PICTURE. It's fair to question a casting choice.

And as for the person being dead, that doesn't entitle them to not being criticized.

Please put some dashes above your sig line so I won't think it's part of your dumb post.

Nice of you to say so

Unfortunately her singing voice had to.be dubbed- which I totally oppose

I have to agree. My wife and I watched this last night and we were both sickened by how Vera-Ellen looked. Honestly, I'm not sure I can watch it again and I LOVE these old, corny musicals. True, her dancing was great but only watchable when her legs were covered, as in the first number with Kaye. If TV ads ten pounds imagine what she looked like in real life. Who else could have played her part? Mitzi Gaynor.

Yes, her thinness was alarming, but her dancing was amazing. At first, you may feel Rosemary Clooney is a big girl, but in reality she wasn't. Standing next to Vera provided a contrast. RC was healthy and nicely built. Poor Vera to have suffered as she did. "White Christmas" is a lovely movie.

reply

Yes Vera's apperance is somewhat alarming to look at, particularly her legs, but like others said just enjoy the movie and her dancing. Vera was one of the few dancers that could do it all, she could hold her own place next to Gene Kelly or Fred Astaire in a dance number.

I remember reading Debbie Reynolds autobiography and she mentioned how at MGM where she and Vera had contracts were practicing in some dance studio. While they were dancing the instuctors kept telling Vera that her hips were too wide or something to that extent. Debbie felt so bad for her. It's so sad the studio system kept putting pressure on stars like Vera, who were healthy and had a good shape. If you look at her eariler films, Vera's body looks healthy, but by the time she did White Christmas her body looks sickly.

reply

Yes, her appearance is somewhat startling when you consider the average woman today:

Talk about NAUSEATING!!

I'll take thin any day.

reply

i still adore vera ellen..she's a great dancer...yes she did have some problems, but you have to give the woman credit..she could dance and had a great film persona to boot..,

reply

She's very attractive (the "kiss or something" scene). As as someone said before an actor who's really ill couldn't have done her routines (or had that beautiful hair).

reply

I find Vera Ellen adorable, too - - and what a dancer! She was really something! In the interview/featurette with Rosemary Clooney, she refers to Vera Ellen as the best dancer at Metro.

I especially like her take on the character of Judy. I very much like her presence and her acting. I find her more engaging than Rosemary Clooney's Betty. That's probably due, in part, to the fact that Judy is a more fun role, but still, I think Vera Ellen really ran with it.

Poor Vera Ellen looks very thin, though. And I mean too thin, particularly in the scenes where we can really see her torso and legs ("Mandy" and "Abraham" come to mind.) I don't know to what stage her anorexia had progressed to by this time, but she looks unnaturally thin and frighteningly so.

reply

Wow...someone posts about Vera-Ellen's anorexia and you take that opportunity to post a bunch of links slamming women for their appearance? Specifically, how fat you think they are?

Do you really not see how you represent the mindset that led to poor Vera-Ellen's disease?

Get over your misogyny. Learn to appreciate women for something besides their appearance. Jesus. I literally can't believe you posted that filth.

reply

Your average man is nauseating.

reply

I found Vera Ellen to be an absolute joy to watch! Her charisma, style and her dancing was wonderful! I love her in the minstrel number. She was perfect for the role, and to say she was nauseating is in very poor taste.
I have a feeling she just wasn't a big eater. I can kind of relate. Sometimes I just skip meals and almost forget to eat. I don't have an eating disorder, but I'm just not big on eating. I think Vera Ellen was probably the same way, and then add on hours of dancing, and you've got a thin woman. But that's just my theory. I think there were also added pressures to have a tiny waist and small frame in Hollywood anyway.
But am I really the only one who would trade my legs for Vera Ellen's long, rock-hard shapely legs in a second??

reply

She was gorgeous ! The Clooney character had a "leg up", ironically, being paired with Bing, but when I watch White Christmas, I'm lapping up Vera-Ellen. She's not Skinny, she's Athletic !

reply

Vera-Ellen is one of the best female dancers ever!

reply

She looked like Doris Day, but sexier !
I'm always bummed when I forget her name. I always remember Clooney and Bing and Danny, but I often forget her name. Seems like a Stage Name, but she is Everything And A Bag Of Chips, as far as I'm concerned.
Great smile, great angles to her body, seemed very natural in front of a camera -- what's not to like?

reply

I often think she looks like a Barbie doll come to life. I just love watching her perform. Very athletic. She had a bit of a tough life - her only daughter died of SIDS at 3 months.

"She began dancing at age 10 and quickly became proficient. One of her fellow dance students at Hessler Studio of Dancing was Doris Day." -from Wikipedia.

"Vera-Ellen was an extremely thin woman for much of her adult life. A Hollywood rumor that her neck was always covered during the filming of White Christmas because of wrinkling caused by supposed anorexia persists to this day. However, pictures and video taken at the same time show her neck appearing normal and undamaged." -also from Wikipedia.

Interesting how some people focus on just one aspect of an actor and use that to sort of condemn their entire career.

reply

boy, would I like to "focus on just one aspect of (her) and condemn her career." Grrr !
She would receive a Condemnation she would Treasure the Rest Of Her Life !

I'M THAT GOOD !!

Haha. I saw someone today and remembered her name, sort of randomly. She said, "You're good."
I said, "I hear that from women All The Time." Haha.

Heck, what I hear from women all the time is a Deafening Silence.

reply

I sometimes confuse her name with Vera Lynn, the singer.

reply

I know this is an old thread, but I don't think she looked bad at all. She was certainly slim but muscular and clearly in good health to be able to do the dance routines, etc.

I had a family member who had an eating disorder, and she was literally half the size of Vera-Ellen in this film. *That's* frightening :(

reply

I suspect OP is the kind of person who mostly likes to put women down for being fat. As other posters have pointed out, Vera Ellen was a wonderful actress and dancer. This film would be nothing without her joyous presence and show-stopping dancing. So you decide to ignore all that and pick on her weight. Probably she was anorexic, and most certainly this was a result of the pressures she faced as an actress and dancer to be as thin as possible. Her performance and her dancing are all the more amazing in light of this.
