I have watched this many times, but I never noticed Danny Kaye smoking and flipping his cigarette onto the dance floor. This happens when Bing and Danny are talking just before the Choreography number. He could have burned the floor with his lit cigarette.

shareIt used to be common to toss cigarette butts on the floor in commercial buildings like stores and restaurants. When I was a box boy in a supermarket in the early 1970s, we would take a big mop broom and push it around the floor once every hour to sweep up the cigarette butts. People smoked in theaters, restaurants, libraries, doctors' offices, and just about everywhere else. I knew very few people over the age of fifteen who didn't smoke.
