The train scene

So Betty and Judy had a private room at first because we see then in it; and then the next day it shows them sleeping in bunks off the main aisle of the train (which is weird; who would feel safe sleeping like that when anyone can just pull back a curtain and do who knows what). Anyway, what happened. Did Betty and Judy give Bob and Phil back the private cabin??

They most likely would have changed trains in NYC or Boston to get a train that went to Vermont thus changing up their traveling facilities.

The train they boarded in Florida was New York bound. At that point in time, Bob had no intention of going to Vermont. He boarded a train that was going where he was going...... NYC. Whether they changed trains in NY is irrelevant. Their drawing room tickets were only good up to New York. Once they decided to go further, they needed new tickets to travel to Vermont.

Just as a point, the movie does show a different train for the second leg of the journey. We first see a Santa Fe RR Super Chief (which would never have run from Florida to NYC!) and then a different train just before the conductor comes through calling out, "Pine Tree..." I seriously doubt there were any direct routes that didn't involve changing trains from Florida to the fictional Pine Tree, Vt. But, if they were on a train going all the way from Florida to Pine Tree, Vt., they could have purchased the fares from the conductor.

Those sleepers were considered safe and were commonly used. There were conductors regularly walking the cars.

The second is a Southern Pacific train. The SP didn't run from New York to Vermont.
