Which edition of the DVD should I buy?

Hi, everyone. I love this movie and am trying to decide which edition of the DVD to buy. I don't have a blu-ray player, so I am looking for a standard definition copy. I'm deciding between the Anniversary edition that came out last year and the 2-Disc Holiday edition that came out last week. If the picture/sound quality is amazingly improved in the 2-disc edition or the additional special features are great, I might buy it, but otherwise I'll probably get the anniversary edition, since it's cheaper. Has anybody seen the newest edition or both of the most recent editions? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

I always check owners' reviews on Amazon when I have to make decisions like this. I have an older version that has a delightful interview with Rosemary Clooney. Hopefully the newer editions include it.

I also have the older single disc version. I've always found it to be perfectly adequate, and it can probably be found used (or even new) online for way cheap. In purusing reviews of the newer DVDs, the reviews seem to indicate that the picture/sound has not significantly been improved (if at all). More likely than not, it's just a marketing ploy on the part of Paramount to get you to SPEND MONEY on the latest and greatest. The advertised special features appear to be pretty worthless to me, and not worth spending the money. The Rosemary Clooney interview/featurette is all you need.

Remember that this is a 57 year old film; how good of picture quality do you expect? :-)

The only thing that would get me to upgrade without question would be if it came packaged with the ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK RECORDING, which has never been released in any format. I understand that a few years back, you could get the DVD for a limited time at Starbuck's, packaged with the Bing Crosby/Danny Kaye/Peggy Lee "soundtrack" album that has been previously issued in various forms including CD. But this is not the original soundtrack, so no dice, since I already have that album on CD elsewhere.

This is also the same gripe I have about WB's constant repackagings/reissues of THE WIZARD OF OZ. Seems like every couple a three years they come out with a new and improved souvenir/special/anniversary/collectors/ultimate/apocalyptic edition, with new material added every time that usually seems to take the form of lobby posters, "collectable" photos (which are usually just a free Google search away), shooting schedules, costume/set/screen tests, producers notes, and other miscellaneous garbage. Again, just to get you to spend money. The same IMPORTANT featurettes and documentaries are usually in every set. I still have the SINGLE DISC set from 1999. As long as it has the old Angela Lansbury documentary I'm happy. Although the 2005 set did have a pretty good feature on the digital restoration and transfer process. But short of the discovery and inclusion of original footage of the Jitterbug and other deleted scenes that were destroyed decades ago, I'll save my money!

I understand your frustration of the reissues. I have a six-year-old, and we've purchased a few movies for him that happened to be reissued at the time we went to buy them (e.g. Aristocats, Finding Nemo) that were around $45. It's nice for some films to have all of those extras, but we don't care about them for most and don't want to spend that much on every one for our child who might not care about them a year later. It's different with favorites over time. Fortunately, we still have a DVD/VHS combo and can watch some of those for him on old VHS. If he likes them a lot then we can splurge on the DVD. Maybe it's time for me to trade my VHS of White Christmas for DVD. Ya think?

I'm a little shocked to see that the version I own on DVD, the 2000 Wide-Screen Collection edition, which I bought back in 2003 and which includes the very nice Rosemary Clooney interview featurette, is now selling for $23.51 on Amazon (sold by Direct Liquidations, fulfilled by Amazon - I guess it's out of print?)!!! The current, "anniversary edition," released in 2009, is available for $16.99 - the same price as the blu-ray edition. If I were buying it today, I would probably opt for the anniversary edition since I have not gone blu-ray as yet.

Some of the Amazon partners have the 2000 Wide-Screen Collection disc for sale (http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B00004YNIX/ref=dp_olp_new?ie=UT F8&qid=1317319402&sr=1-2&condition=new), as new, for considerably less, currently, one has it available for $6.95 + $2.98 shipping, which I would personally opt for. You can easily pick it up used for three or four dollars.

I have it on tape. But once a year or so I get it at my local PL because their disc has "Going My Way" on it as a bonus. There's a few songs I like in that film (Bing in his prime).

Going My Way is a very nice movie, too!

My DVD is probably the same edition as yours, jackboot. It's okay, but occasionally suffers from blue fringing (from misalignment of the color elements). Apparently, all the DVD versions come from this same transfer, hardly befitting the first production in VistaVision (Motion Picture High Fidelity!).

I don't have Blu-ray yet either, but the images on the DVD Beaver website of the new White Christmas blu-ray makes a compelling argument for upgrading:

The reds are pumped up a bit over the original Technicolor prints, but it still makes for a pleasant holiday treat.

I personally own the Blu-ray of this film, having made the switch in formats a year ago and have not looked back since. That being said the film looks INCREDIBLE on blu-ray, so if your thinking of upgrading from DVD to Blu, this should be one of your first purchases for fans of the film.
