Weird sounds from Kaye

In the last number of the film "I Wish I Was Back in the Army," when Danny Kaye is singing, he makes some odd sounds to accentuate his lyrics.

Those are the exact same sounds that Bert Lahr makes in "The Wizard of Oz," when, as the Cowardly Lion, he sings "If I Were King of the Forest."

Is Kaye imitating Lahr? Or, knowing both guys were steeped in Yiddish/Jewish theater traditions, are those sounds characteristic of Yiddish/Jewish "schtick"?

"Don't call me 'honey', mac."
"Don't call me 'mac'... HONEY!"

I know what you're talking about, and it cracks me up when he does that!

I would guess that it's a morph of funny/outrageous/peculiar sounds that would play in exaggerated theater such as Vaudeville.

It is bad to drink Jobu's rum. Very bad.
