Does the movie ever mention what happened to the General 's son/daughter

I have watched this so many times, but never understood why his granddaughter lived with the General. Of course I assume the parents have passed, and the General and Emma were raising her. If they are alive, surely that would have attended the big party. It's funny what you notice in a film, lol. To me it just seemed odd that both parents of a young girl would be gone.

I love this movie, and watch it every year several times. When the General comes into the surprise party, dashing and handsome in his uniform (it still fits too), I always start crying.

I felt her parents were stationed overseas, like a recovering Europe or Japan.

Not ideal places to raise a family post-war.

I was a little kid in late 50s and we would hear about local families whose sons were stationed in Greenland or Alaska.

Oh thank you so much. Especially with the grandfather being a General, that makes a great deal of sense.

This was my mom's favorite movie; I'm watching it now on AMC. today is 5 years that she passed away and I can just feel her next to me enjoying the movie with me, especially Danny Kaye's antics, lol!
