Good movie but has very little to do with Christmas

I sat down last night and watched this one for the first time. It's a good film, with a fun plot, likable characters, charismatic performers and some enjoyable song-and-dance numbers. (Though the movie's obvious set-on-a-soundstage artificiality at times makes it feel more like a stage play than a movie.)

Considering the film's name, poster art, and status as a Christmas classic, however, I was surprised by how little the story actually has to do with Christmas. Christmas only plays into the film's narrative at the very beginning and very end, with the interim having nothing at all to do with the holiday. This doesn't detract from the quality of the film, but going into it expecting a "Christmas movie," I was somewhat disappointed in this regard.

I made the same observation a few years ago .. https://moviechat.org/tt0047673/White-Christmas/5c141ef74363bd53a8f13b0f/This-could-have-been-the-ultimate-Christmas-movie

Ever watch a Hallmark Christmas movie? Every set is decorated up the wazoo. In fact, I'm pretty sure I saw a bathroom with a wreath on the toidy..

The General's Inn was gorgeous and much of the movie takes place there - if they had even decorated the Inn like a Hallmark Movie and used a couple of Christmas costumes for a couple of the musical numbers, it would have been a major improvement.

I read your post.

I agree with you that the film needed more holiday decor. I also think they should've worked Christmas somehow into the storyline as well, from beginning to end. Nothing about Christmas is even mentioned for like 3/4 of the movie. After all, I think there's a difference between a movie that simply takes place during Christmas and a movie that is actually about Christmas. It's only the latter that I think can actually be properly called "Christmas movies." (This is why Die Hard is NOT a Christmas movie.)

I will agree though that even just adding some decorations to the set, as you say, would've added a lot.
