Do you realize that Ramses and Nefertiri are probably brother and sister?

Well, why else would she be living at court, and expecting to marry the guy who became pharaoh? Think of another explanation for her position.

Because yes, some of the ancient pharaohs married close relatives to keep the bloodline "pure". And Cecil B. DeMille liked to sneak some spice into his films, and disguise them with religion and sanctimony.

In the 1950s she probably would have just been explained as a "ward" of the older Pharaoh or something, perhaps from some unrelated noble family.

I find it telling that there WAS no explanation for her role at court, none that I remember.

Because like I said, DeMille loved sneaking perverse stuff into his sanctimonious movies.

reply

Yes, and the audience would have interpreted it however they wanted to, based on what they were used to.

I assume most of the biblical epic target audience hadn't heard of "pharaonic marriage", which is still the official term for a dynastic marriage between brother and sister.

But I bet DeMille had...

reply

This was not common knowledge at the time.

reply

I bet DeMille and the writers knew, though.
