I don't understand something IMDB said

Haven't seen this movie in years, so for some reason visited this board. IMDB's review mentioned that when this movie was made, they couldn't mentioned Robert Stack's homosexuality. Did I miss something? He wasn't as masculine as Hudson, but why would he be considered gay? Was there a book and if so, was it in there?

reply

I think what they mean was in the book Robert Stack's character Kyle Hadley was gay and Hollywood avoided it in the movie. I am not sure though since I have never read the book.

The Kyle Hadley character in the novel (Cary Whitfield) is not gay, and a low sperm count is not an issue. He is an alcoholic, though, and that definitely has an effect on his marriage (and marital relations).

"In my case, self-absorption is completely justified."

Then wny did IMDB say he was gay? If he was, why did he want to get married? Did you enjoy the book?

reply

I enjoyed the book very much - the movie added a lot of things that weren't in the novel, such as Kyle's fascination/obsession with with guns - the film also kicked up Marylee's nymphomania several notches, and added her mad mambo dance as her father collapses on the stairs - in the novel the father - a quiet, soft-spoken man, shoots himself after killing the gas-station attendant character.

As to the IMDB inference that Kyle was gay, well, people make mistakes.

IMDB doesn't ever say anything. I have ever heard IMDB speak.
