I felt sorry for a creature

it was on alien planet, alone, scared and actually harmless untill you attack it. cruel ignorant people

reply

I felt pretty bad for him as well.

Also, he had to grow up overnight! Poor baby... He just wanted some sulfur and a little peace and quiet. I'll bet he was cold, too, because his natural environment was infernally hot. Isn't it remarkable that we can feel so much compassion for an animated model-turned-alien creature? Ray Harryhausen's creations ACT!

I absolutely love the Ymir design, with his thrust-backwards elbows, which make him unmistakably a Harryhausen creature. What vocalizations, too!

Someone dared to suggest an MST treatment for this film. Shame on such a notion! This is a wonderful, simple sci fi film. Treat it kindly.

*** The trouble with reality is there is no background music. ***

reply

I do love me some MST, but this movie is too good to have been considered for that show.
You really do feel sorry for the creature. Snatched from his home planet, caged, prodded with sticks, attacked by dogs and elephants, shot at with all manner of firearms. We really suck.

reply

To be fair, he wasn't even born at the time, so he didn't know his home planet.

Dogs, elephants, Italian farmers, and electric nets are something else though.

I have a new philosophy. I'm only going to dread one day at a time.

reply

True, he didn't know his home planet, but his body was made for it (which is why the humans wanted to study him for their own survival on Venus).
If he was cold-blooded like Earth reptiles, that would affect his mobility. Hmm, I wonder how his body temperature was regulated?
