200 lire is/was worth......

Todays its worth virtually 0.

In 1957, 200 lire was worth a dime U.S. Some cowboy hat, the boy is going to get for a dime.

I had a chance to travel in Italy, and it was crazy paying for dinner in a nice restaurant with a 100,000 lire note (52$), keep in mind this was 1969.

I traveled with a eurail pass, and every time you changed countries out came the old bills, and in came the currency of the new country. A tip for travelers, you get a better price using the home countries currency, though for convenience its easier to just use U.S. This was before credit cards.

Just saw the kids hat. No way he was able to get that for a dime, or 200 lire.

About 30 cents US. Of course 30 cents was worth a lot more then too.

This would make the "half million lire" reward about $750. Not too bad a pay day for a fisherboy in late-50s Sicily.

Or 2500 cowboy hats if you are so inclined.

I still don't see why they would still pay him. Sure they didn't specify they wanted what was in the container, just the container, but what government would agree to such a thing?

reply

He had the hat on extended layaway, the 200 Lire was just the final payment.

(Yes, I just made that up)
