So the husband got away with murder?

Afterwards Scottie would probably be investigated, right?

Even though the nun was there the second time... seems too much of a coincidence that two women decided to end their lives jumping from the same spot with him being present.

It's hard to say what Hitchcock intended, it's enigmatic. But my feeling is Scotty will tell all and an investigation would lead to the husband's arrest.

Without Judy to testify, how could the police pin anything on Elster?

reply

1) In the alternate ending, the police is after him. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VJBSSkn0Ldw

2) If nothing extraordinary happens in a story, why write a book or make a film about it?

And it's not a coincidence, it's a spot that reminds Judy that she was the accomplice to a murder and also that Scottie would only love when she's not herself (i.e. impersonating Madeleine).

reply

Lots of films and stories don't have anything extraordinary happen in them.

reply

Actually, no women decided to end their lives jumping from the belltower.
