i won't

Not bad casting actually. They'll probably cast Margot Robbie or Jennifer Lawrence as the female lead.

reply

Yeah i could totally see either of them as Madeleine (esp Robbie would I can just see in the role now), for a spit second I thought Scarjo but then remembered shes BlackWidow so too associated with RDJ (and quite a few years older than those 2) and she was in Hitchcock! I maybe could see older ones like Charlize and Jolie possibly being in the running as closer to RDJ age not so un PC (but then isn't one of the themes of the movie a middle age guy going crazy over a notably younger woman) .. Unless they planning to shake it up for modern times and go with a bame actress in which case Zoe Saldana, Zoe Kravitz, Zendaya? (too young)

reply

Why?

What next? A remake of Casablanca? Citizen Kane?

Does modern Hollywood truly believe it can improve upon cinematic perfection?

RDJ must seriously be back on the drink and drugs if he chooses to get involved with this.

There's a reason why Vertigo often tops 'best film of all time' lists among respected critics and filmmakers, because, guess what? It's *one* of the very best films of all time.

Probably bc Vertigo is over 60y old now and Psycho got a remake (Rear Window also got remade..Psycho although it was crazy at the time esp the way it was done shot for shot but colour, was kind of understandable alittle bit as its first and foremost a horror movie, and horror movies get remade all the time).

I read a tweet similar to your comment though, saying when The Godfather is remade it will be the sign of the end of days.

the likes of 'modern' classic movies (70s onwards) like Godfather, Jaws, Star Wars, Raiders, BTTF being remade is literally unthinkable (sequels - yes, remakes - insanity).. But give it a couple more decades.. who knows.. I mean if Vertigo is getting a remake its pretty much all bets are off .. (and other classic stuff like Planet of the Apes got remade, and even Ghostbusters got a remake.. before they realised they'd s**t the bed and quickly fast tracked a sequel to the original)

reply

Well, the Psycho remake didn't go down very well. I'm not sure who'd want to repeat that mistake, although even that film had a reason to exist, because it was an experiment on the part of Gus Van Sant (i.e. a shot-for-shot remake of the original, simply with different actors/in colour). And the Rear Window remake was a TV movie.

Still, I'm one of those people who regards Vertigo as superior to anything else Hitchcock made (a high bar indeed).

That said, of the films you listed, Jaws is the one I could justify a 'remake' of, because the 1975 film, as brilliant as it is, takes a lot of liberties with Richard Bencheley's original novel. By contrast, Star Wars, Raiders and BTTF are original films, and should thus remain untouched. If the new Vertigo were an adaptation of D'entre les morts, the French novel upon which Vertigo was based, it might be justified, but a direct remake of the 1958 classic strikes me as absurd.

Harvey, you kill me. The only "liberties" Speilberg and his team of screenwriters did was turn a bubblegum dime-store paperback into a cinematic work of art.

As for Speilberg, he should be ashamed of his "Westside Story" remake. It isn't as much bad, as it is unnecessary and instantly forgettable.

reply

I have forever wanted to remake Citizen Kane and intentionally make it the worst movie imaginable.

reply

@ bozo500...Why do you think the point of the remake is to improve on the original, like there was something wrong with it?

It's just a new version of an old movie. It's not seeking to better the original, it's a modern updating taking into account changes in society, attitudes and technology.

reply

The thing that was great about this movie was NOT the script - the story has HUGE plot holes in it. It was Hitchcock's direction that gave it fame. (Although many think of this as one of Hitchcock's best, I don't put it in my top 10 of his films).

I'm not saying that there are no directors who could do a good job with a suspense thriller, but why not do an original story instead of a remake? Unless they fix the plot holes.
