After the cat fight...

After the cat fight between the two strippers at the Moulin Rouge nightclub, a picture of a couple of cats is shown briefly and someone says "meow" kinda softly.

Does anyone know who that is or what that's supposed to be? I've only seen the MST3K version of the movie and never the original, so I don't know whether it was one of the Best Brains guys or whether it was really in the movie.

And if it was in the movie... why is it there? What does it mean? Who the hell would do that? Was it supposed to be a joke? A humorous way to break the fourth wall? What, I ask you, what?!

Hmm. A simple meow has never vexed me so.

I (regrettably) own this trash on DVD and it wasn't on there. But there was a brief pointless shot of a pink piece of paper with a Philosophical narration. Or is that in both? .5 out of 4

I may be mistaken but I don't remember any 'meowing' sounds during that scene. Methinks it was probobly Joel and the Bots making an imitation cat sound for some reason, but I could be wrong.

reply

C'mon, you guys.

The "meow" is a part of the original soundtrack.

It is a none-too-subtle (well, at least for most) reference to the fact that we just witnessed a, yes, CAT FIGHT!

Maybe it is a little TOO obvious.

Sheez...

yeah, it was just a moment of comedy to lighten up the proceedings. Kinda silly, but effective nonetheless.

I heard it loud and clear on my DVD. I thought it was a great little touch of one of my favorite childhood films. Very cool scene. It should be pretty obvious why it was there...a bit of humor in a movie that thankfully doesn't take itself too serously.

Watching it right now on Cox Channel 3. It's there!

The DVD you can get from Netflix has the unaltered on one side and the Mystery Science Theater 3000 version on the other side. So you can see them back to back if you like.

Life is never fair, and perhaps it is a good thing for most of us that it is not.

I got 10 dvd's at the .99cnet store (hence aorund .10 cents each) and onw of those was this movie... the "meow' IS in it. It's obvious! It's just a sh***y movie (which I like, by the way) in which the director decided to add his toucj o'class to it after the obvious "cat fight"... maybe just in case some one in the audience didn't know what was going on...

Please, people! Don't get to deep about this flick nor about the sound effect.

I want you to put it between your knees!

I saw this flick as a teenager on local Detroit televion (several times in the early 1980's...at least 15 years, or more, before the first season of "MST3K" came out), and the "meow" could be heard every time the movie was shown.

The "meow" is in the original print. It was not added by Joel, and the "bots", on "MST3K."

Cheers!

Sincerely, Steve B.

I can hear the meow on mine too. A schlocky movie true, but it's such a classic !! Just saw another one last night "The Brain Eaters". Nasty little critters drill up from the depths of the earth and attach themselves to people's necks. If I'm not mistaken the actor who played the lead character in that film was in a couple episodes of Channing which starred Jason (Herb) Evers. I find Channing quite impressive with the subjects it covered since it was done in 1963. Pretty cutting edge to my way of thinking.

Ed Nelson produced and stars in that one! In fact, he designed/created the alien creatures, too.

I wonder if anyone recognizes Leonard Nimoy (Nemoy in the credits) in that early role.

Leonard Nimoy? I don't remember Leonard Nimoy being in TBTWD.

I saw the cat but no sound. I think it's just a visual joke to say we had just watched a cat-fight.
