What Year Was This Actually Made?

My cable guide always lists the film as 1959. However, the IMDB has TBTWD listed as released in 1962. Which is correct?

the credits in roman numeral say 1960

reply

Yeah, I noticed that, too, with the alternate title replacing Brain with Head on the end credits. That technically should eliminate the '59 option, though I've heard that many times as well.

Probably filmed in 1959 (late that year), registered in 1960, released in 1962

I have two books that say it's 1959 but IMDb and the year on the DVD both say 1962 so I found that confusing as well.

Always remember that movies aren't always released to theaters in the same year they are filmed. Considering the fact that "TBTWD" ran into censorship problems, this probably delayed its release even further.

Cheers!

This film was a 'head' of it's time, surpassing PSYCHO for gore, and likely did not receive a wide release(or even a rating) The part that is edited mostly is when the monster takes a bite out of Evers' neck, and spats it on the ground.

reply

FYI, "ratings" didn't begin until 1968. At the time this was made & released, a movie either did or did not receive a Production Code Approval.

It was made in 1959 under the title The Black Door but was not released 1962 under it's new title.

It seems it had a lot of trouble getting released so there was a three year wait. There was an attempt to release it in the UK in 1961 under the title 'The Head That Wouldn't Die' but it got refused.

'The Black Door' is a puzzling title as it doesn't seem to have anything to do with the movie. And that title wouldn't have sold it so well in the exploitation market.

reply

It was actually made under the title THE HEAD THAT WOULDN'T DIE; there was some press coverage in 1959 that confirmed this. THE BLACK DOOR was a proposed title dreamed up by American International Pictures in 1962 when they were preparing to release it.
