Odd scene: onlookers near Cash McCall's private plane?

In the scene where Lory Austen drives Cash McCall up to the fence outside his private plane at the airport, there is this small crowd of onlookers who seem to be there for no apparent reason, other than just staring at his plane. There are some well-dressed adults, as well as four young boys, each of whom has a baseball mitt on their hand.

Just what was the deal with that group of onlookers? Was his plane something of a spectacle that would draw a small crowd of onlookers, or what?? And back then, did boys typically go around with a baseball mitt wherever they went?

Did you catch a very young Don Grady as one the boys. Don went on to play Robbie Douglas on My Three Sons.

Somebody needed to witness Lori wrecking the c ar!

Well, I think an A-26 Invader, redone as a private executive aircraft, sitting that close with both engines idling, would attract a bit of a crowd of airplane fans, anticipating a 'sporty' take-off.

It would have attracted me as a 16-year-old back in 1959. Heck, it would attract me today as a 72-year-old.

Me too! When I was a kid my friends and I used to ride our bikes to the local airport to look at planes and watch them take off.
