Sandra Dee...BEST GIDGET!

The movie was kind of a shock to me and I wasn't sure how I felt about it because it was so different from the Sally Field version.

But, it eventually grew on me and now it's one of my favorite movies. It's even a favorite of Sandra Dee's granddaughter, Olivia.

I'm bummed she didn't do any of the other follow up movies.

Yeah, watching this movie makes me happy and sad at the same time because this was the only time we see Dee as Gidget. The movie is great because it showed teenage romance and coming of age in a very ideal, escapist, friendly, sorta campy (but very enjoyable) way. It was cute that such an adorable, innocent tomboy be flirted with and brushed off, but still so protected and adored by the boys and her parents in the movie.

I have a sinking suspicion that that is why the quality of the sequels paled in comparison because there was no charismatic, prestigious lead protagonist in them. It's a shame. It would've been great if Dee continued with the series, so we would've seen how the character would've really grown and developed over the course of the movies.

Gidget just can't seem to catch a break since the great TV show with Sally Field was also prematurely canceled and never brought back. :/
