How old is Gidget supposed to be?

I missed how many candles were on the cake and I don't recall her age being mentioned. I saw the scene where she was drinking a beer. I thought her to be 16, 17. Her parents weren't very strict and they didn't put their foot down when she wanted to go that party because she just ran out the door and went anyway.

In the movie, it's her 17th birthday (in the novel she's not 16, yet).
In the 1950s the legal drinking age in California was 18, so with a bit of cheating (who wouldn't?) it's very likely that she had a beer at 17.
I think, her parents were taken by surprise. And, after all, they were in a state of confusion.
In the novel Gidget had been supposed to go with her parents on a trip for the weekend. Gidget , pretending to have problems with her tonsils again, stayed behind.
