Best of the Best

This is what movies are all about. It is such a breath of fresh air to see HFTH again and to see how life once was as portrayed by actors who could really act.

I just got a subscription to ShowTime on Direct TV. I have looked at the menu now for several days and haven't found a movie yet I want to watch. Thank heavens for TCM.

I am sorry that Robert Mitchum and George Peppard did not get nominated for their roles in "Home From the Hill". Eleanor Parker and George Hamilton were excellent in support, but it is the Mitchum and Peppard duo that makes the film for me.

I think that this was one of Robert Mitchum's best and most natural performances. True he was not the Texas man that he was cast as, but his larger than life personality fit the role of Wade Hunnicutt perfectly.

This film does not get the airtime that it should, although if I remember correctly, TCM is scheduling again for airing in November. Not sure but I think so. I'll have to check that calendar again.

I agree. Mr. Mitchum and Mr. Peppard were wonderful in "Home from the Hill." I believe this may be Mr. Mitchum's finest acting jobs on film. He was just great.

I'm in full agreement and couldn't have said it better myself.

So true! That's what makes him a really good actor. Mitchum is more a Texan in this than a lot of Texans; he's that good. Wade's not a sympathetic guy yet I liked him enough to root for him. I wanted him to survive for another chance to make things right with his family.

That may be true but I think it has something to do with the length. It's probably hard to put a movie this length into the rotation.

Woman, man! That's the way it should be Tarzan. [Tarzan and his mate]

I agree. This is a great movie and I never get tired of watching it. Mitchum, Peppard, and Hamilton were wonderful in their roles. I believe people with southern roots dating back to the depression must really enjoy this movie. I recall how my dad, now deceased, enjoyed the hunting scenes when we first watched Home From The Hill in the 1960's. He got such a kick out of the dogs and their realistic sounds of being on a hunt. It reminded him of his hunting days in Arkansas in the 1930's.

I just saw this film for the first time and enjoyed it very much. For me George Hamilton has been well kinda of that actor I always thought of as a joke. Mr. fake tan and all that. Until I saw this film I never knew he could act. He played his part very well. I did think that Mitchum and Peppard were the best parts of this movie. Especially Peppard. Well then I think he was good in everything I ever saw him in. This was a good film. Thank you Turner Classic Movies for playing it.

This is indeed a very good film, full of flawed, dysfunctional characters, some of whom are as much villains as they are victims. I wouldn't be surprised if Robert Mitchum, who was a bit of a ladies man in real life, saw something of himself in this character, leading it to be one of his finest roles.

This post is exactly how I feel about George Hamilton. I’ve seen a few of his films and he wasn’t too memorable in most of those movies. This is the only time I’ve seen him in something “good”. It must be the direction from Vincent Minnelli that made the difference. I know George Hamilton as someone who is famous for being famous, so it’s nice to see him in this movie.
