Is this the first film...

To introduce the now cheesy and ghostly 'Oooooooh' sound effect which is so often spoofed nowadays? I thought it was very effective in the film. Was it done before?

Yes, it has been done before, not exactly the same, but somewhat similar. If you can get the 1958 movie "I Married A Monster From Outer Space", starring Gloria Talbott and Tom Tryon, notice in the opening credits a similar "Oooooooh" sound effect, which was and still can be a little frightening, and it starts the movie off strong on a scary note, and sets up a very spooky undertone that helps carry the movie on with its monster alien plot. Check it out for yourself; it's a classic 1950's monster flick any fan of these types of movies wouldn't want to miss.

Yes I agree, it is still pretty spooky sounding if a little over done. They used a similiar "oooooooh" effect in segments of 2001: A Space Odyssey and the same ghostly cooing is used rather memorably in certain segments of Argento's Inferno film.

I've just watched 'La Belle et la Bete' from 1946. The heavenly choir in that film make weird similar sounds at times in the creepy castle.
