Inherit the Wind (1960) vs Elmer Gantry (1960)?

Elmer Gantry is a masterpiece. Inherit the Wind is well made, but I find it a little overrated.

Both are excellent films, but "Inherit The Wind" is far more ambitious, and succeeds at everything it attempts. "EG" is about a subculture and some very interesting people, "ItW" is about a fight for the heart and mind of a nation! One that's still going on a hundred years later, the dark forces that want to keep the populace ignorant and helpless, and which were holding the nation back in 1925 are still with us and are still horrible powerful.

So it's not just an ambitious and brilliant film... it's a prescient one. Well, so is "EG", conman preachers are also still with us, and they're on TV!
