Why Purple Noon?

I've always seen the English translation of this title as Purple Noon. That's how it was listed at the place from where I rent DVDs. But its French title, Plein Soleil literally translates to Full Sun.

How does this title apply to the movie? Is there such an expression as "purple noon," and if so, what does it mean?

reply

No answer in all this time? I was wondering the same thing.

Five years on and we stumped everybody.

reply

Face it-- it's a talent, Pearl.

reply

It sounds cool I guess!

reply

I've read something years ago that said that a purple moon is another way to say someone is emotionless. Like how Ripley is.

reply

I don't know what is meant by Purple Noon either but perhaps it's a poetic way of describing murder at noon, as indeed is Full Sun. The emotions rage most strongly at noon. Like a witching hour but a diurnal one.

Why do you refuse to remember me?

reply

I agree. "Purple" seems to evoke something ominous as it's a darker color and has both red and blue in it. And, whatever it means, it sounds to me much more intriguing as a film title than "Full Sun", at least in English (don't know about French though).

I agree. A purple sun evokes murderousness. Full sun is an usual expression in English but it's a little bit pedestrian.
I give my respect to those who have earned it; to everyone else, I'm civil.

reply

what about translating plein soleil as "high noon" or is that too reminiscent of Gary Cooper's western? Idiomatic anyhow.

reply

I always thought it was the shadow cast on the sail at the end of the film, seemed like it was at high noon. A purple shadow, purple noon?

reply

A theory: perhaps it is because of a typo. 'Midi Violent' would be French for 'Violent Noon', and the French for purple is 'violet'... though there could be the idea of figuratively clothing oneself in imperial purple at the zenith of one's fortunes...

I beseech ye in the bowels of Christ, think that ye may be mistaken.

reply

Plein soleil-the two words together translate as sunlight, which I take to mean the seductive atmosphere of the Mediterranean, which is bathed in soft sunlight so much of the year, and is conducive to naughty behavior.
